I haven’t written a post for awhile because our family computer bit the dust with a bad logic board. A computer that looses it’s logic is no longer good for much.

I leave for NYC this thursday morning for the IAM conference with my friend Jonathan Quist. I am going because a handful of friends sent me donations so that I could pay for it. I am going because some friends were generous. I love being able to be in NYC because it is like getting a blood transfusion for my art soul. I am glad to live in MI because this is where I am from and where I belong. My tap root that feeds my art and life is here.

The IAM conference is christian at it’s core. It is a gathering of art professionals and young ones looking for good conversation and good ideas. Thank you to all those of you who help the Beerhorst family continue on in their art making life living adventure through your financial gifts. We do what we do in part because you help us. God helps us through you. Isn’t that cool?

It is just after 9:00 and I just came back from the library. I rode there and back on my bike with a back pack over my shoulder. It was a cold 12 degrees. I look at this picture of Pearl and long for the warm weather that will eventually be here. The cold ride on my bike was so intense. Some times I feel like it is these extremes of life that keep me feeling alive. So I am glad for winter’s harshness for the sake of contrast it creates.

I have been painting in the house because I just can’t get the carriage house studio warm enough to work in with it’s little wood stove and drafty up stairs. The winter presses our family together tighter and forces us to be with each other in ways we don’t have to in the warmer weather. I am working on a painting which is a sort of family portrait which has Brenda in the role of Mother Mary and us all under the protective folds of her cloak. This painting of being huddled together is a little of what I have been feeling this winter.

My first Sock Monster…, originally uploaded by powerbooktrance.

Rose had a sockmonster sewing class this past Saturday. We had four students who each had made their own monster by the end of the afternoon. Pearl and I made homemade pesto pizza for lunch. Rose did a great job of leading everyone through the steps of cutting, sewing, buttoning, embroidery and stuffing. It was fun to warm up a cold Saturday afternoon with a warm crafting circle in our dinning room.

We want to have more classes and are thinking along the lines of rughooking, collaging, oil painting,woodcut printing, pot-holders…
